Continuity Editing

Continuity editing is when the piece is edited so that the cuts are very smooth and invisible to the audience. The audience when watching this can understand the story better and can believe they are actually there. Some of the most useful techniques in continuity editing is : Match on action and 180° rule. Match on action is when the cut is invisible. Its so neatly cut you cant
tell its there. A good match on action should start on the first shot and finish on
the second.

The 180
° rule is shown in the diagram.

The diagram shows the 180° rule very well. The red zone shows you that the camera can't be filmed in that area because it means the eye
line would not match up and therefore the two people wouldn't look as though a conversation
is taking place. The camera can move up to 180° around the conversation.
But MUST NOT pass the line of interaction otherwise it will look bad and unreal.
